Scratchboard art is a mesmerizing process that allows artists to create intricate and beautiful designs using a combination of Speedball India Ink and Ampersand Claybord.

In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of making your own scratchboard masterpiece. So, let's dive in!

Materials Needed:

Speedball Super Black India Ink, and Ampersand Scratchboard tool Kit with Claybord

  • Paintbrush
  • Soft bristle brush (optional)
  • Pencil and paper (optional)

Steps:

Step 1: Prepare the Claybord. Ampersand Claybord is an ideal choice due to its smooth surface and durability. Ensure the board is clean and free from any dust or debris.

Step 2: Brush ink your Claybord with included India Ink.  Shake the bottle of Speedball Super Black India Ink well to ensure the pigments are evenly mixed.  Using a soft bristle brush, gently apply a thin layer of ink onto the clayboard. Be mindful not to apply too much ink at once, as this may result in smudging or pooling.

Step 3: While your ink is drying, plan out your design either in your mind or on paper.

Step 4: Now comes the exciting part - scratching! Use included scratchboard tools to carefully remove the ink layer, revealing the white clayboard beneath. Experiment with different scratching techniques, such as hatching, cross-hatching, or stippling, to create various textures and tones in your artwork.

Step 5: Focus on adding depth and details to your design. Vary the pressure and angle of your scratch tools to create lighter or darker areas. Take your time, step back occasionally, and assess the overall composition to ensure a balanced and visually appealing result.

Step 6: Once you are satisfied with your scratched design, gently blow away any remaining ink residue. This will help enhance the contrast between the black lines and the white clay surface, giving your artwork a polished look.

Step 7: To preserve and protect your scratchboard masterpiece, consider framing behind glass.

Conclusion: Creating scratchboard art using Speedball ink and Ampersand Claybord is a truly captivating experience. By following these steps and allowing your creativity to flow, you can unlock your true artistic potential and produce stunning, intricate artworks. So, gather your materials, let your imagination soar, and embark on a scratchboard journey like no other!
